Stenbock House, 15 December 2020 – At today’s cabinet meeting, the members of the Government approved in principle support measures for the areas most affected by the additional restrictions in the total amount of more than 5 million euros. The support conditions will be specified by Thursday, when the measures are scheduled to be approved at the Government meeting.

‘So far, the second wave of the coronavirus has particularly severely hit Ida-Viru County, where the strictest restrictions are currently in place due to high infection rate,’ Prime Minister Jüri Ratas declared. ‘With the measures agreed today, we will support the areas of accommodation, catering, and entertainment in Ida-Viru County, as well as the fields of culture, creativity, art, sports, and education all over Estonia,’ he added. ‘By supporting local business and thereby people of Ida-Viru County, we make every effort to alleviate the economic impact of the restrictions in the said county. The purpose of the support introduced by the Government is to ensure people’s livelihood and continued income, as well as to help local businesses recover as soon as possible after the coronavirus crisis.’

Support to businesses

The business measure will support companies in Ida-Viru County that had to suspend their activities due to the restrictions imposed by the Government on 10 December with 2.1 million euros. ‘The amount of the specific support is calculated on the basis of the double wage cost of the company for November this year. The maximum amount of support per company is 150,000 euros,’ Minister of Entrepreneurship and Information Technology Raul Siem specified.

In the event of business support, the state aid aspect also has to be taken into account, as it can prolong the process of receiving support by almost one month.

Support for culture, hobbies, and sports

The members of the Government agreed to allocate 560,000 euros through the area of government of the Ministry of Culture to support culture, hobby education, and hobby activities, of which 430,000 euros are intended for Ida-Viru County and 130,000 euros for the rest of Estonia. A total of 811,000 euros will be allocated to support the field of sports, including coaches, of which more than 60,000 euros will be allocated to Ida-Viru sports institutions and clubs. The Ministry of Education and Research will support the education and activities of young people and private education in the amount of more than 1.5 million euros through its area of government (of which 205,000 euros will be directed to educational institutions in Ida-Viru County).

‘Due to the restrictions on preventing the spread of the coronavirus, both cultural and sports life in Ida-Viru County has come to a standstill,’ Minister of Culture Tõnis Lukas said. ‘In order to preserve the diversity of the cultural sector and sports options, we have to support covering the unavoidable costs of the sector.

’On Thursday, the package of support measures will be approved at the Government meeting.
