Tallinn, Stenbock House, 22 September 2020 – Considering the sharp increase in the spread of the coronavirus in Estonia, the Government encourages people to act cautiously.

‘Being worried about the public health, epidemiological situation, society, economy, healthcare, social system and the welfare of Estonia, we encourage people to make a collective effort to help ensure that the coronavirus is unable to decimate our everyday lives. Estonia has experienced a dramatic increase in the spread of the coronavirus, and the following weeks will be crucial in respect to whether we are able stop the spread of a larger wave among the population. Having control over the spread of the virus is essential for us all, and Estonian society as a whole, in order to avoid the reestablishment of stricter restrictive measures designed to protect the health of all Estonian people. We have faith in the reasonable behaviour of the Estonian people, which helped us to successfully manage the outbreak that began in early spring.’

In relation to this, the Government encourages people to:

– Behave supportively, cautiously and shrewdly. The reasonable behaviour of each individual person helps to prevent the damage that accompanies the extensive spread of the virus.
– Keep a greater distance than usual from strangers and also familiar people. This is the most effective measure for avoiding infection. You must stay at home if you are ill or have symptoms. You should remember that a person is the most infectious two days before and two days after the onset of symptoms.
– In regions where the infection rate is high, avoid crowded places. If this is not possible, wear a protective mask in crowded indoor spaces and when using public transport. All parties, including those held within circles of family and close friends, are a source of heightened risk of infection, and careful consideration should be given regarding their organisation.
– Download the HOIA mobile app. This notifies a person if they have been in close contact with a person infected with the coronavirus.
– Abide by hygiene rules, which will help you to avoid becoming infected with the virus.
– If you suspect that you have the coronavirus, call your family physician or the family physician hotline at 1220.
