Prime Minister Kaja Kallas met with representatives of the tourism and catering sector to talk about the impact of the coronavirus crisis on the sector and discuss solutions that would help to ensure the health and safety of employees and clients alike as well as the future perspective of the sector.

“Thanks to vaccinations, we have been able to keep our society and economy open – there are essentially no restrictions for people with valid vaccination or recovery certificates and companies can operate freely as long as they abide by control measures. I am grateful to entrepreneurs who have prudently followed the control measures and codes of conduct – they have helped to save lives. I was also happy to hear that 90–100 per cent of the employees of many tourism undertakings are vaccinated, even though there are exceptions,” said Kallas.

“By following the control measures, all people and sectors contribute to curbing the spread of the virus and reducing the burden on our hospital network. The Estonian economy is doing well, a large part of the population is vaccinated, and the growth of domestic consumption has created good preconditions for companies to remain as open as possible in their operations. The tourism sector is an important part of the economy and the people working in it are very dedicated to what they do. We need to learn to live with this virus and we want for companies that have done their all to adapt to the new circumstances to maintain their strength,” said the prime minister.

The prime minister and representatives of the tourism sector also discussed solutions to help entrepreneurs to organise their activities so that the risk level of the coronavirus remains low. In addition, they talked about the vaccination requirements of various countries and restrictions applying to travel.

Participants of the meeting included representatives of the Estonian Convention Bureau, the Estonian Hotel and Restaurant Association, the Estonian Travel and Tourism Association, the Estonian Spa Association, and MTÜ Estonian Maaturism.
